Poppy Seed Roll

Makowiec (Mahk-o-vjetz), Poland’s iconic poppy seed pastry is one of the main desserts served at the Christmas table of Poles all around the world! Although it has a very big importance and symbolism around the Christmas holiday, specifically, it's also a well known, and popular national Polish dessert all year round. Anyone familiar with Polish cuisine is no stranger to this dessert which is made as a sweet yeast pastry roll, filled with a rich, bittersweet filling of poppy seed, minced walnuts or chestnuts and (sometimes) raisins. It's topped with a powdered sugar glaze sprinkled with extra poppy seeds. It's a very unique and characteristic taste is sure to be enjoyed and remembered!

As an interesting side note, in Poland during Christmas, dishes with poppy seeds are considered to be a sign of prosperity, fertility and abundance for the upcoming new year. That's why it's important to have at least one during the holiday season!

Butter, poppyseed, eggs, sugar, salt, wheat flour.

Remove Poppy Seed Roll from the freezer and leave at room temperature for up to six hours. Alternately, place bread in the refrigerator for up to 12 hours.
