Benefits of Herbs, Fruits & Flowers in Polish Cuisine

Herbs

Are you familiar with the health benefits of certain fruits or plants, such as rosehip, elderberry, or nettle? These are just some of the multitudes of plants that have been used for centuries in folk and herbal medicines around the world, including in Poland! Poland’s fields and forests abound in these natural nutrients and that’s why there’s a long tradition of using certain herbs and plant extracts in Polish culture. We’ve compiled a list of some of the most commonly used fruits and plants in Poland and their benefits, as well as how you can enjoy them with some of *Polana’s products!

Rosehip – Rosehip (Rosa canina), has been used for centuries as an herbal remedy. Its beneficial properties contribute to the proper functioning of the immune system. Rosehip contains 100 times more vitamin C than apples and 5 times more than black currants! Moreover, it is a source of other valuable ingredients, such as: vitamin A, B1, B2, E, K, flavonoids, tannin, organic acids, essential oils, pectin, mineral salts and iron. Rosehip is frequently found in Polish cuisine in the form of a jam or syrup (in fact rosehip jam is considered a classic filling for Poland’s famous paczki!).

Rosehip

You can find all this nutritious value in our Łowicz Rosehip syrup or Rosehip Tea, OR, you can also opt for our rosehip jam filled paczki if you’re looking for something sweeter and less nutritious.

Black Currant – this is one of the best sources of natural vitamin C, outdone only by rose fruit. Eating only a handful of currants a day takes the place of consuming vitamin C pills or dietary supplements. The fruit is also a great source of other vitamins and micro elements such as B vitamins: B1, B2, B6, Vitamin K, provitamins A, biotin, folic acid, flavonoids, and micronutrients such as potassium, calcium, iron and more!  Black currants are a great natural antioxidant and immune booster. They also lower the level bad cholesterol and improve the functioning of the digestive system among many other things.

Though its effects are painful on the skin, it does wonders from within. Nettle has countless health benefits and has been treated with respect for centuries for its healing properties.  With its multitude of naturally occurring vitamins and micro elements, it’s great for a number of things:  it helps to purify the blood, aids in the production of red blood cells, and improves circulation, its anti-inflammatory properties help to fight allergic reactions, it promotes hair, scalp and nail health, it’s known to help relieve pain, has a cleansing effect on the digestive system, and is considered a natural antibiotic. This is all just among a number of many, many other benefits it provides.
